Holiday Weekend Causes Uptick in Firework-Related Injuries

Published: July 6, 2023

This time of year, emergency departments prepare for a slight uptick in patients because of fireworks.

"About a week leading up to the 4th of July we'll see pretty consistent numbers on a day-to-day basis," said Tom Wells, RN, a Methodist Women's Hospital Emergency Department nurse. We don't necessarily see the most injuries on the 4th of July itself."

While deaths are less common from fireworks, serious injuries are not.

When it comes to the explosives, Wells says safety precautions and education on risks is a must, but emergency departments are always ready in case something goes wrong.
