Omaha Lifestyles: The Misbehaving Butterfly in Your Throat

Published: Jan. 5, 2015

Could your thyroid be to blame for those extra pounds?

“A lot of times as women get older, weight tends to creep on, " said Crystal Seluk, DO, a thyroid surgeon at Methodist Physicians Clinic Council Bluffs ENT Clinic. “The thyroid is one of those things that can lead you to gain weight. It’s important to get your thyroid metabolism checked out.”

Your thyroid acts to regulate the metabolism in your body. Located in your neck just above your breastbone, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland which covers your throat on either side. If you swallow and feel something there, that’s your thyroid gland.
