Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital Adds State-of-the-Art PET/CT System

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital has added a cutting-edge tool to help patients in their fight against cancer. Beginning July 27, southwest Iowa’s only digital positron emission tomography/computer tomography (PET/CT) system, a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool, is available to Jennie Edmundson patients.
“Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital is committed to providing patients with the best possible chance at survivorship,” Imaging Manager Sheri Holub said. “This tool complements our outstanding health care and cancer treatment programs, and it will help patients achieve the best possible outcome in an environment they are comfortable in.”
The technology, an upgrade from earlier analog PET/CT technology, comes with a number of benefits for Jennie Edmundson patients and staff members. Among them:
- Scan times cut in half to less than 15 minutes, which will improve patient comfort and allow more patients to have access to this advanced technology
- Increased sensitivity, allowing the scan to detect smaller lesions faster
- Smaller injections of radioactive tracer necessary for patients, which will reduce radiation exposure to them and staff members

The PET/CT system is the latest step in Jennie Edmundson’s effort to provide comprehensive cancer care. The Methodist Jennie Edmundson Cancer Center offers a range of cancer services and is recognized by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer as an accredited program.
