Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital Named Screening Center of Excellence

Published: Oct. 22, 2020

Joining more than 680 screening centers across the country that are following best practices as outlined by the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital has been named a Screening Center of Excellence.

Jennie Edmundson was recognized for its ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening. Low-dose CT screening for lung cancer carried out safely, efficiently and equitably can save tens of thousands of lives a year by finding lung cancer early when it is most treatable and even curable.

“Jennie Edmundson is dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality care,” said Sumit Mukherjee, MD, pulmonologist at Jennie Edmundson. “Low-dose CT screening has shown to be the only proven method to detect lung cancer at an early and treatable stage. We are thrilled to be part of this elite group, setting an example for responsible screening practices across the country.”

Designated Screening Centers of Excellence are committed to providing clear information on who is a candidate for lung cancer screening based on current evidence, as well as complying with comprehensive standards reflecting best practices developed by professional bodies such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP).

Through established guidelines for controlling screening quality, radiation dose and diagnostic procedures within an experienced, multidisciplinary clinical setting, Screening Centers of Excellence are ensuring that lung cancer screenings’ lifesaving benefits transform lung cancer care in their local communities.

Lung cancer kills more men and women worldwide than any other cancer. Catching lung cancer early, when it is easier to treat, can improve the chances of remission or cure. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends yearly lung cancer screening for people who:

  • Have a history of heavy smoking, and
  • Smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years, and
  • Are between 55 and 80 years old

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital offers lung cancer screenings, including low-dose CT scans. If you are eligible for a lung cancer screening, you will receive a low-dose computed tomography scan (also called a low-dose CT scan or LDCT). In this test, the CT scanner uses low-dose X-rays to take detailed images of your lungs. The test takes only about a minute, and you will learn the results within 24 hours.

“We are proud and honored to be working with Jennie Edmundson Hospital as a GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer Screening Center of Excellence,” said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, president and CEO of the GO2 Foundation. “Their commitment to practice responsible lung cancer screening will lead to advancements in research and many lives saved.”
