Methodist Hospital Care Team Takes Patient to the Zoo

Published: Dec. 3, 2021

26-year-old Joy Parker has found a second family in her Methodist care team, but her relationship with the team didn’t come easy. You see, Joy struggles with behavioral challenges, forcing her nurses and therapists to get creative in not only providing adequate treatment and therapy, but also establishing a trusted connection.

Up until recently, Joy was largely non-verbal. But when her care team proposed a trip to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, they were shocked by her response: “I’d love to go.” And her team knew they simply had to make it happen – no matter how much planning and preparation it would entail. Thursday's zoo trip – which was accompanied by mild temps and plenty of sunshine – made the patient's face light up with exactly what she’s given her nurses and therapists – JOY.
