'Colon Cancer Doesn't Discriminate': Methodist Doctor Urges Screenings

Published: March 21, 2022

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and doctors say now is a good time to start getting those regular screenings.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. It's so common that one in 20 people will experience it, according to Hernan Hernandez, MD, a colon and rectal surgeon with Methodist Physicians Clinic.

"Colon cancer does not discriminate. If you're from a city or you're from a small town. If you're Hispanic, Black or Asian, it's prevalent," Hernandez said.

He added: "Would you rather hear, 'OK, you have a cancer and this is how we're going to beat it'? Or would you rather hear, 'Hey these symptoms you've been having for the last year are because you have a very advanced colon cancer and now we have very limited options'?"
