Jennie Edmundson's 'Cutting Edge' Services Accommodate Southwest Iowa Patients
Published: Oct. 28, 2019Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital is on the “cutting edge” of women’s health, having developed a full line of care for patients of southwest and western Iowa who wish to start or grow their families.
Initially, Jennie Edmundson’s maternal care started with a group of three doctors of obstetrics and gynecology, but it is now a group of seven who can deliver at the hospital. When a pregnancy is considered high-risk by referral, Jennie Edmundson has maternal fetal specialists in place to take appointments three days a week. The maternal fetal specialists commute from the Methodist Women’s Hospital — an approximate 27-mile drive from Jennie Edmundson.
From places like Harlan or Shelby, this eases the commute for pregnant women and families who have to travel far for their monthly, weekly or biweekly appointments.
The specialists co-manage patients alongside the OB/GYN, giving southwest and western Iowa women experiencing high-risk pregnancies even more access to a higher level of care.
“High risk pregnancies are becoming more common. We focus on pregnant moms who come in with pre-existing medical conditions or pregnancy-related conditions that can occur. Both of those are pathways for us to assist in management,” said Dr. Joshua Dahlke, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist.
