Supporting Women's Health - One Bra at a Time

It’s time for women across the metro to sort through their skivvies. This October, your bra donation can help Methodist Physicians Clinic support breast health.

Throughout the month, Methodist will accept your donation of new and gently used clean bras to give to women in need at the Lydia House Women & Family Center at Open Door Mission. The home is a place of shelter and healing for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. They provide a critical stepping stone between emergency shelter and safe, independent living, while offering resources and programming to help women make it on their own.

“If someone doesn’t have the funds, there aren’t a whole lot of places that women can go to for inexpensive undergarments,” said Dr. Tifany Somer-Shely, an OB/GYN at Methodist Physicians Clinic Women’s Center who helped organize the drive. “Shelters don’t necessary have enough to go around. If you are homeless or near homeless, you may have to use the same bra continuously for months or years on end or you just go without.”

Not only are properly fitting bras essential for health reasons, but they also help women feel good about themselves.  

“Something as simple as a good-fitting bra goes a long way in giving women confidence and a feeling of self-worth,” said Dr. Somer-Shely. “As health care providers, our hope at the Methodist Women’s Center is that we can do our part to educate and empower women no matter their background or means.”

The bras will be collected at drop-off sites located at the Methodist Physicians Clinic Women’s Center, Methodist Women’s Hospital and Methodist Physicians Clinic Indian Hills – all places within the Omaha metro where Methodist Physicians Clinic providers offer OB/GYN care.
