Margie Johnson

Sinus Cancer Survivor

"The diagnosis was a surprise," explains Margie Johnson, a busy South Dakota farm wife stunned to learn that cancer was the cause of her headaches.

Margie received the advanced treatment she needed from the care team at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, including head and neck surgeon William Lydiatt, MD. "They sure took good care of me," Margie says, though she admits to being more comfortable caring for others. Eager to remain active and helpful throughout her six-week stay for outpatient radiation therapy, Margie shared her considerable talents with the Methodist Hospital Volunteers in Partnership.

A gifted seamstress, Margie sewed drain bags for breast cancer survivors and clothing for victims of sexual assault. "I didn't feel sick or disabled, and the volunteers were so positive and encouraging. Their friendship made such a difference!" says Margie. As Gretchen Gfeller, senior volunteer services coordinator, explains, "Margie is very thoughtful and dear to our hearts. Her focus is always on what she can do for others."
