Judy Thomas, PLMHP

When Judy Thomas, PLMHP, was a teenager, she was introduced to a person who made a lasting impact on her life.

“At the time, she was the only one who believed in me and was patient with me,” Thomas said. “When choosing my career as an adult, I wanted to be able to positively impact another person’s life, the way I was impacted.”

As a counselor with the Methodist Hospital Community Counseling Program, Thomas enjoys working with couples, veterans, and individuals struggling with trauma and substance abuse.

“The personal satisfaction of seeing these populations succeed, despite their statistical likelihood of failing, is unmeasurable.”

Thomas traditionally employs cognitive behavioral therapy but also incorporates other approaches, including solution-focused brief therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and – her personal favorite – mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

She’s passionate about breaking the stigmas surrounding mental health and showing her clients the true Meaning of Care. Here’s what she wants each of those clients to know: “You’re safe with me – physically and emotionally. If you need someone to just sit with you while you’re in a dark place, I’ll do that. I’ll help you up when you’re ready to do that, as well. There are times I’ll challenge you and help you challenge your own maladaptive thinking patterns. But you’ll always be the one in charge of your treatment. Your successes are your own. I’m simply here to guide you.”

Thomas, a self-proclaimed nerd at heart, enjoys learning about theories regarding psychology and space. She’s a fan of ‘90s pop culture and epic fantasy adventure films, especially “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.” Gardening, which she dubs her full-time hobby, doubles as her favorite act of self-care.
