“I love my job.”

Catherine Enenbach, RN, is a labor and delivery nurse at Methodist Women’s Hospital. There’s nothing more she’d rather be doing. 

“When I come to work I know that for somebody that's the best day of their life or their worst day,” said Catherine. “I know what I do has an impact on people, so I try to make every moment special.”

Baby’s big arrival

The care Catherine provided definitely had an impact on one family recently at Methodist Women’s Hospital. Catherine was their nurse for the arrival of their first child. In a letter of thanks, the excited new father described how Catherine impacted their big day.

“All the classes and all of the advice from those that have been through it before don't begin to describe the feelings, emotions and wonder that it encompasses when you become a parent. Right from the start you were amazing and everything two scared, first time parents could have hoped for. You guided us every step of the way, kept us calm when we felt like freaking out and assured us that we were going to be fine.”

In a new parent’s shoes

The mother of a one year-old son herself, Catherine knows there’s nothing quite like the experience of becoming a parent for the first time. Catherine says her role helping babies come into the world is something she cherishes. It’s all about guiding new parents through a very big day. 

“First time parents usually have no idea what's going on,” said Catherine. “I try to put them at ease by just explaining that things are normal, and try not to get worked up in the excitement myself. Every new baby arriving is such an exciting time that can be hard to do!”

And as that new dad wrote so eloquently, it’s a moment that means everything.

"While we don't know you, we knew your heart, and it is a heart of love, compassion and caring. Thank you for being patient. Thank you for being kind. Thank you for being understanding. Thank you for being calm. Thank you for being helpful. Thank you for being gentle. Thank you for taking the time to make us comfortable. Thank you for putting us at ease. Thank you for reassuring us. Thank you for being there when two first time, scared, soon to be parents walked in. Thank you for being you. Thank you for keeping my wife safe. Thank you for giving me my son."

The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day.
