Free Skin Cancer Screening

Published: June 3, 2015

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital will hold its 19th annual free skin cancer screening on Thursday, June 25, 5 - 7 p.m. The screening will be done in the Outpatient Surgery Area, located near the east entrance of the hospital on the first floor.

Physicians will offer to conduct a spot check or full-body exam, but participants are not required to undergo a complete exam. A copy of the screening results will be sent to each participant and their physician if requested. Free information on the prevention of skin cancer will also be available.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. The most serious type of skin cancer -- malignant melanoma -- accounts for nearly 10,000 of the more than 13,000 annual skin cancer deaths.

Fortunately, most skin cancers, including melanoma, can be cured if detected early. But, according to a survey by the American Academy of Dermatology, most Americans don’t know the warning signs of melanoma and only about one-third examine their skin for signs of skin cancer.

Space is limited for the free screening, and preregistration is required. To register, call (712) 396-7600.
