Medical Interpreter Meets Vital Language Needs for Jennie Edmundson Patients

A medical interpreter for Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs has fought tirelessly to speak on behalf of COVID-19 patients to get the care they need.

An immigrant from Peru, Julia Tyson received her interpreter certification from Metro Community College. Through nearly 20 years of work for Methodist Health System, her appointment book has filled up.

"We didn't have too many Latino patients in that time," Tyson said. "But now oh, yeah. I'm busy every day."

Theresa Stevens is the administrative director of nursing services for Jennie Edmundson Hospital. She said Julia's role is critical in delivering quality care.

"The patients have to understand what's going on," said Stevens. "They have to be a partner in their care, so Julia's very vital in that."
