Methodist Fremont Health gives area high school students a firsthand look at the profession

Earlier in July, area high school students who are interested in careers in medicine got to experience some hands-on instruction from medical professionals at Methodist Fremont Health’s Healthcare Career Exploration Camp.

Held over two days, 18 students entering 10th, 11th and 12th grades toured the hospital and spoke with staff about the various job opportunities there are in healthcare.

“They get to go down to the ER and see our nursing staff and nursing assistants and paramedics and EMTs and physicians that help us out in the emergency room and on our ambulance and helicopter,” said Misti Crow, a cardiopulmonary system coordinator at Methodist Fremont Health.

For Anna Bartram, who will be a senior this fall at Gretna High School, she has always known that she wants to work in healthcare and the camp has helped her narrow down some of her options.

“It's helped in the sense of, I know that I really like chaos,” she said. “I know I love — what's another word for– I love, just, trauma. Like, I think that's such a cool aspect (of healthcare) and the critical thinking of that, I find very interesting. So I have been looking into orthopedic, because orthopedic deals with a lot of trauma. I’ve also been looking into emergency departments, but if I want to go to a bigger hospital, then you’ll get more of that trauma stuff than let’s say a smaller hospital.”
