Congratulations to Ryan Carnahan, BSN, RN, GERO-BC, for being honored with The DAISY Award. Carnahan, a nurse coordinator in the Cardiac Unit at Methodist Hospital, is a Nebraska Methodist College alumnus.
He was nominated by his service leader, Britney Cope, BSN, RN, SCRN, who wrote:
“Ryan faced an incredibly challenging patient and family situation. The patient was admitted for a serious clinical situation, accompanied by her two minor children. The family had been living in an extended stay motel, and it was quickly becoming clear they were struggling. Ryan immediately recognized the need for both clinical care and human compassion. While speaking to the patient and her children, he noticed the kids had not eaten in quite some time. Without hesitation, he asked the patient for permission to take them to the cafeteria; mom approved. Ryan paid for their full meal ... bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, chocolate milk and a large bag of popcorn! The children were visibly excited and grateful. Later that morning, the patient required an urgent procedure, creating a difficult situation as there was no one to care for her children. The possibility of contacting CPS was discussed, adding emotional strain for everyone involved. Ryan collaborated with a care coordinator and social work to find a safe solution. They were able to reach a family friend who came to pick up the children, allowing the patient to proceed with her needed procedure. Ryan’s empathy, initiative and unwavering compassion truly changed the trajectory of this situation. He demonstrated the highest standard of patient- and family-centered care, going far above clinical responsibilities. His actions reflect the true meaning of nursing leadership. We are proud to have him as a leader on our team!”
