Methodist mourns the loss of Dr. William ‘Bill’ Shiffermiller, ‘a remarkable caregiver’

Methodist Health System is remembering a dedicated and gifted physician. William “Bill” Shiffermiller, MD, died on Friday after an extended battle with cancer. He was 74 years old.

Dr. Shiffermiller’s medical career spanned more than 40 years, almost all of them connected to Methodist. He began practicing internal medicine in the late 1970s after graduating from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. 

“Dr. Shiffermiller’s legacy is a tribute to his expertise and the genuine concern he had for his patients. The relationships he built – and the bonds he formed – kept him energized year after year. He was a trusted leader and a mentor to so many. But at his core, he was a remarkable caregiver,” said Steve Goeser, president and CEO of Methodist Health System.

One grateful patient who honored Dr. Shiffermiller with a The Meaning of Care Award, wrote, “He treated every patient as a person and was tremendous in his care of them. He was the absolute greatest.”

Dr. Shiffermiller held several leadership roles with the health system, including vice president and chief medical officer, and medical director of the Methodist Community Health Clinic. He retired in 2021.

In addition to caring for Methodist patients, Dr. Shiffermiller served our communities as a member of the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board. 

“His kindness and compassion will always be remembered. His mission was to help others and make a difference. We are grateful to have known him as a leader and friend.” said Tracy Madden-McMahon, president and CEO of Methodist Hospital Foundation.

Dr. Shiffermiller is survived by his wife, Laura, and four grown children. Services are pending.
