Methodist Physicians Clinic Regency Welcomes Dr. Welstead
Published: Sept. 18, 2019Dr. Andy Welstead has joined the internal medicine team at Methodist Physicians Clinic Regency. He received his Bachelor of Science in biology from Midland Lutheran College (now Midland University) in Fremont. He completed his medical training at the Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, Colorado.
Dr. Welstead, who served for seven years in the Air Force, was an internal medicine resident at Keesler Medical Center at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. He previously practiced at the Ehrling Bergquist Clinic at Offutt Air Force Base.
He is particularly interested in helping patients with diabetes management.
“One aspect that I like about type 2 diabetes is that it’s a disease that responds to diet and lifestyle modification,” Dr. Welstead said. “If we catch it early on as prediabetes, then we can sometimes prevent the development of overt diabetes without the need for medications. On the other hand, if diabetes has developed, then medications or combinations of medications are often required, but we can still achieve significant measurable improvement through healthier living that not only impacts diabetes but also leads to overall better health.”
He said being an internist is special because it allows him to use his critical thinking skills while forming long-term patient relationships built on trust and communication.
“What I’d like patients to know is that when they come in and see me, it’s a no-judgement zone. I want them to be completely open with me. I want them to know that they can trust me. That whatever they tell me is going to remain confidential. That I respect what they have to say. That I’m going to try to listen to them and hear their concerns, as well as address those concerns. And ultimately, if we’re able to do all of that, we should be able to help them achieve a healthier life.”
Outside of work, Dr. Welstead enjoys fishing, hunting, other outdoor activities and spending time with his wife and two children.
Dr. Welstead is now seeing patients at Methodist Physicians Clinic Regency. Appointments can be made by calling (402) 354-1500.
