Nurse's Care and Compassion Feeds Body and Soul

Above and beyond

Nurses often go above and beyond to make sure their patients are comfortable and safe. Methodist nurses extend that compassionate eye to those who love and care for them.

Britney Cope, RN, a nurse in the cardiac unit at Methodist Hospital is one of those nurses.

Going the extra mile

Britney recently found herself caring for a patient whose husband wouldn’t leave her side. He was there for every moment and noticed her incredible bedside manner.

“Britney carries herself with dignity and respect,” the patient’s husband wrote in a thank you note to Methodist. “She explained every medication to my wife and me to make sure we understand the purpose of them. Her verbal skills were excellent and she spoke slowly and clearly.” 

Empty stomach

After three days in the hospital, Britney overheard the husband and wife talking. She discovered through their conversations that the husband – who was on disability and didn’t have enough money in his bank account to get a meal – hadn’t had anything to eat. 

“I was hungry, embarrassed and stuck here with my sick wife,” wrote the husband. “Not only did Britney care enough to share some information with me to help me put something in my stomach, she acted on it and blessed me with a way to eat.”

“I try to let families know that I’m there for them, too,” said Britney. “While the patient is my first priority, I want to make sure the family is comfortable and able to be healthy and safe so they can be there for their loved one.” 

Compassionate care

It was Britney’s act of compassionate care for both the patient and her husband that she was recognized with the DAISY Award for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women’s Hospital. The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Nurses can be nominated by anyone, including patients, family members, physicians, supervisors or their peers.

“I can tell when someone is there to do their job and the ones who go the extra mile to show they care. Britney is one of those nurses who care… She is an angel in disguise. For this reason and because of her great attitude, behavior, kindness and love she showed to me and my wife, she deserves to be nominated for the DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses. All hospitals should have nurses like Britney Cope.”

“I think that at the end of the day, if you can feel like what you did made a difference for someone, you're doing a great job,” said Britney. “I really love what I do here at Methodist.”
