When Wounds Won't Heal, There's Help

Many Types of Wounds

At the Advanced Wound Center we see dozens of patients each week with many different types of wounds. Some have relatively new wounds, while other have been battling their wounds for weeks, months and sometimes years with no success. It can be overwhelming and painful for patients dealing with these types of injuries.

We treat many types of wounds including:

  • Chronic wounds
  • Pressure sores and ulcers
  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Surgical incisions and slow or non-healing surgical wounds
  • Wounds from traumatic injury
  • Wounds from vascular disorders
  • Arterial insufficiency ulcers
  • Burns

No matter what type of wound we are treating, our goal is to improve the quality of life for all patients. We want them to heal quickly and completely.

Wound Treatment in Many Forms

Every wound and situation is different. That’s why we use personalized, evidenced-based processes to provide specialized treatment and care. Patients are seen on a regular outpatient basis, generally each week. Wound treatment can involve everything from weekly wound debridement, skin substitutions or specialized dressings to time spent in our hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100 percent oxygen while in a pressurized chamber. This increased pressure forces oxygen into the blood and body tissues. Doing this promotes faster wound healing by improving blood flow, vascularization and removal of toxins.

The most common conditions that benefit from HBOT include:

  • Slow healing severe diabetic wounds
  • Tissue damaged due to radiation therapy
  • Certain infections of the skin or bone
  • Problem skin grafts
  • Crush injuries and acute ischemic conditions

Healing Time

Our goal is to have chronic wound patients healed within 14 weeks. Our average is 27 days. When you’re talking about complicated wounds that have been around longer than that, it’s pretty amazing.

Another amazing number is our success rate. We hold a nearly 97 percent success rate for healing wounds, and our patients report a 96 percent satisfaction rate. Our successes in treating wounds earned the Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital Advanced Wound Center a Center of Distinction Award from Healogics.

More Than Just Statistics

Our success numbers are something we’re very proud of, as they show how our staff exhibits The Meaning of Care with each visit. We really become a second family. But even more important than numbers are the smiles and letters from happy patients who have been healed.

Perhaps the happiest days at our wound center are those when we hear the ringing of a bell. That bell, rung by a patient on their last day of treatment, is the sound of success – a successful healing of body and soul.
