'This Is a Milestone': Metro Doctors, Hospitals Weigh in on Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Approval

Published: Aug. 23, 2021

Top doctors in Omaha said news of a fully approved COVID-19 vaccine marked a milestone in the course of the pandemic.

The Food and Drug Administration gave its stamp of approval to the Pfizer shot on Monday.

At Methodist Health System, Dr. Jessica Jones, a specialist in infectious diseases, said a small number of her COVID-19 patients told her they were waiting for the FDA to fully approve a vaccine.

Jones said she reminded them the vaccine was designed to prevent their visit in the first place, by minimizing symptoms that lead severe cases and hospitalizations. Doctors also said the vaccine offers the best way to decrease future variants, past the Delta variant, from spreading.

"No COVID is not the goal," she said, "It is to prevent severe COVID. Again, that's what we're seeing here, so we really want people to get their shots."
