KETV highlights work of Methodist's community health workers

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began requiring health facilities to conduct SDOH surveys in January 2024. But Methodist Health System has really taken the idea and run with it as far as process and approach goes compared to other health systems in the region.

Last year, Methodist added community health workers to both Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women's Hospital. They don't wear scrubs or white coats. They're not social workers. It's simply someone who knows about community resources and can connect with patients in a friendly, nonthreatening way.

"Being present and being there and being that initial face that cares about them. I think that's huge in itself," said Hector Sanchez, Methodist Hospital's community health worker.
