Nebraska Methodist College Opens New Learning and Academic Resource Commons
Published: Oct. 25, 2022Nebraska Methodist College (NMC) recently opened a new Learning and Academic Resource Commons (LARC) and renovated its library.
“The LARC is a great addition to the campus," said Deb Carlson, NMC president and CEO. "It provides a welcoming space for students to study. It also provides students with needed resources like tutors, writing assistance, printing services and more. Having everything accessible takes some of the stress off of students so they can focus on learning.”
The LARC, previously known as the Student Engagement Center, is on the second floor of the Clark Center. The updated space provides additional collaborative group and individual study spaces, including lounge seating, couches, booths and tables. The commons area also features a student nourishment area with free snacks and coffee. In addition, the LARC has improved lighting, strengthened WIFI and access to electrical outlets.
“Everyone studies a little differently," said Lindsay Snipes, NMC's vice president of institutional effectiveness. "After spring and summer 2020, we wanted students to reconnect with each other and to campus."
The space allows for improved student access to the library and other academic resources currently in that area, including Trio SSS, advising, academic success, accessible testing center, tutors and study spaces.
The library moved from the first floor to the second floor of the Clark Center. It’s now located in the LARC and features updated study spaces.
“As the John Moritz Library has transitioned to more digital resources instead of stacks of physical books and journals, the previous physical space footprint became inefficient,” Snipes said.
“The library has an Apple TV and convenient space for group work, as well as cozy single-person study booths,” said Whitney Springer, manager of the John Moritz Library. “Books are available for checkout, and there are reference resources and laptops that can be used in the library.”
The library is available for student use after hours with badge access.
