Three Methodist hospitals nationally recognized for commitment to quality stroke and cardiac care

Published: Aug. 20, 2024

Three Methodist hospitals were recently recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) for quality stroke and cardiac care, earning high distinctions among a number of prestigious hospitals nationwide.

This year, Methodist Hospital – which has been recognized by the AHA for stroke care since 2014 – and Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital received the following awards for ensuring that stroke patients receive the best, most appropriate research-based treatment:

Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke

  • Methodist Hospital (Gold Plus)
  • Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital (Silver Plus)

Both hospitals also received a Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll℠ Award, which signifies the most up-to-date, evidence-based care for patients with type 2 diabetes when hospitalized for a stroke.

“We are well aware of the quality care that our stroke patients receive across Methodist Health System,” said Alex Stunkard, Methodist Hospital’s stroke program coordinator. “But to be recognized alongside one of our sister hospitals in this capacity further illustrates the health system’s dedication to meeting nationally-recognized standards while improving the health of all our communities.”

Additionally, Jennie Edmundson – which has been recognized by the AHA for NSTEMI (non-ST elevation myocardial infarction heart attack) and STEMI (ST elevation myocardial infarction heart attack) care since 2014 – and Methodist Hospital earned the following awards for offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing dangerous heart attacks.

Get With The Guidelines® - Coronary Artery Disease

  • Methodist Hospital (STEMI Gold Plus)
  • Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital (STEMI Silver Plus and NSTEMI Gold)

The hospitals also received another Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award for the care of type 2 diabetics when hospitalized for a heart attack.

“Maintaining AHA recognition illustrates Jennie Edmundson’s relentless efforts in providing optimal care for heart attack patients across western Iowa,” said Marcia Keith, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital’s cardiovascular service leader. “But we believe it’s our compassionate approach to such high standards of care that sets us apart. It’s one thing to provide great care. But Methodist truly provides The Meaning of Care.”

Finally, Methodist Fremont Health earned the AHA Get With The Guidelines®  - Rural Coronary Artery Disease NSTE-ACS Silver recognition award for offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing non ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). This, after earning a bronze award in the same category last year.

“We know that folks living in rural areas have a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular events than their urban counterparts,” said Brian Brodd, Methodist Fremont Health’s director of cardiopulmonary services. “But this recognition illustrates our commitment to seeking improvement in the care we provide while ensuring the people of Fremont and surrounding communities are met with the care they deserve – especially when minutes matter.”
