Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Ryan Shelstad joins Methodist Physicians Clinic

Ryan Shelstad, MD, has always been interested in science and medicine. He was inspired to become a surgeon after his cousin became a living organ donor for his son who developed acute hepatitis and liver failure at the age of 3.

“My cousin and his son underwent a new procedure with success. The son’s liver lasted nearly 20 years.” 

A cardiothoracic surgeon with Methodist Physicians Clinic - Westroads, Dr. Shelstad believes it’s his responsibility to help patients and their families navigate life-changing moments.

“The experience can be stressful, happy and sometimes – unfortunately – sad.  While we strive for excellent outcomes, cardiovascular disease remains the No. 1 killer in the U.S.,” he said. “It’s important to develop a trusting relationship with patients from the beginning. I build that trust by taking the time to explain the procedure, discuss the potential risks and answer any questions patients and families may have.”

He’s particularly interested in aortic surgery, including aortic aneurysm repair and valve-sparing aortic root replacement.

Dr. Shelstad said the most rewarding part of his job is helping patients through difficult times and seeing them recover.

“Watching someone who was once too sick to do everyday activities return to their family and normal life is incredibly fulfilling,” he said.

While he often receives praise as a surgeon, Dr. Shelstad knows that he’s just a part of a larger care team.

“There’s a whole team that’s involved in delivering good surgical care to patients,” he said. “And then after surgery, there’s an ICU team and a hospital team. And none of that could happen without all of those people.”

When he’s not working, Dr. Shelstad loves to travel with his family. He was born in Germany to Midwest parents and later grew up in Omaha.
