OMAHA – A physician whose medical roots began as a teen volunteer at Methodist Hospital, is now providing pulmonology care to patients at Methodist Physicians Clinic in Council Bluffs.

Dr. Sumit Mukherjee returns to Omaha and Methodist after a six-year stint at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City. His medical career has also taken him to the University of Texas-MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

He attended the University of Nebraska-Omaha and during his college years he worked as a phlebotomy technician at Methodist Hospital. At UNO he earned his bachelor of science in biology. He went on to obtain a master’s of public health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

It was during his time as a volunteer at Methodist that the future doctor met his future wife and his best friend in the volunteer program married his brother.

Next stop was the Kansas City University of Medicine where he obtained his master of science in biomedical research. Dr. Mukherjee returned to Omaha and UNMC for medical school.

His residency training in internal medicine was completed at the University of Missouri Kansas City, as well as his fellowship in pulmonology and critical care medicine.

“I believe patient care is a team effort.” Dr. Mukherjee said. “In critical care medicine I'm often faced with situations that are challenging for patients and their families.  At times, there is no right answer and difficult decisions need to be made.  Helping to heal patients and their families is a multi-faceted process that is interdisciplinary and requires team-work by several providers, patients, and their families.”

In his spare time he enjoys running, cycling, basketball and home improvement projects.
