Dr. Bernadette Hughes Joins Methodist Physicians Clinic Neurology Staff
Published: Sept. 22, 2022Bernadette Hughes, MD, strives to have an authentic relationship with each of her patients.
"I initially try to develop trust so I can communicate truthfully,” said Dr. Hughes, a neurologist with Methodist Physicians Clinic. “Sometimes the information I have to deliver is difficult to hear. One needs discernment to gauge where the patient is and whether they’re prepared to listen. Developing a relationship is organic and dynamic.”
Dr. Hughes focuses on general neurology but has specialized training in peripheral neuropathy and neuromuscular disease. She performs electromyography (EMG) testing to study these problems, and she also enjoys taking care of patients with myasthenia gravis.
“Neurology is extremely intellectually stimulating,” she said. “The patients are fascinating. They have real-life problems, and you need to be open-hearted and a very good listener. I love meeting new people and trying to help them solve their problems.”
Even with decades of experience, Dr. Hughes remains committed to learning.
“If I don’t have the answer or I’m not sure what the answer is, I will persevere to find it,” she said. “I’m not afraid to ask others for help, which I think is important to let patients know. I will definitely be direct and honest with them.”
Outside of work, Dr. Hughes enjoys skiing, sailing, camping at the Boundary Waters in Minnesota and spending time with her dog.
