OMAHA  - A love of kids and babysitting jobs through high school and college is what drew Dr. Emily Bendlin to pediatrics and her medical school rotation in the specialty solidified her decision.

“I always liked medicine, but more importantly I’ve always liked kids,” Dr. Bendlin said. “During my pediatric rotation it was the ‘aha’ moment. It was so fun and I was so excited when I went home. I knew at that time this is it for me – pediatrics is where I’m supposed to be.”

Omaha and medical school were next. While attending the University of Nebraska Medical Center she volunteered with House Calls for Kids, the Buddies Program, the Respect Clinic and participated in international service trips to India and Jamaica.

“What I love about pediatrics is in one room you might have patient who isn’t able to talk so you determine what’s going on based on your clinical skills,” she said. “The next room might have a patient that needs more counseling or further resources. Not knowing what’s awaiting you in the next room is what draws me to it. Working with kids is fun. What other medical field is there where it’s acceptable to make a goofy face at a patient?”
