Dr. John Higgins Joins Methodist Physicians Clinic Cardiology Team

“Just watching the heart beat is one of the most fascinating things we can do in medicine,” said cardiologist John Higgins, MD.

That fascination is what drives him to combine cutting-edge approaches with the personalized, compassionate care that Methodist is known for.

“Methodist has a patient-centered mission,” said Dr. Higgins, who sees patients at Methodist Physicians Clinic. “This is why I got into medicine in the first place – to take care of patients and to impact as many lives as possible. What I want for my patients is for them to live into their 70s, 80s and 90s. And not just live, but have an active lifestyle – be able to pick up their grandkids and go on vacations.”

Dr. Higgins is particularly interested in lowering the risk for heart disease through preventive cardiology; treating cholesterol issues through lipidology; and using advanced cardiac imaging techniques such as cardiac computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

While he loves using the most advanced techniques, they’re only one part of his approach to care.

“The best part of my job is developing those relationships with my patients,” he said. “Because you can read books and journal articles, apply the science and see patients get better – and, obviously, I want to see my patients get better – but each patient is a different relationship. I look forward to seeing their lives evolve and being there with them on their journeys as we navigate their heart problems together. When I’m able to help them feel better or see those changes being made, there’s nothing cooler than that.”

Outside of work, Dr. Higgins can be found spending time with his wife and three children, running, reading World War II nonfiction and playing chess.
