Dr. Megan DeKam Now Seeing Internal Medicine Patients at Methodist Physicians Clinic

Megan DeKam, DO, was 9 years old when a car accident nearly took her father’s life. Decades later, she counts the experience as a turning point.

“Because his surgeons and medical team didn’t give up on him, my dad survived, and he’s been one of the most important people in my life,” she said. “My family was forever changed for the better because of that experience, and because of that, since childhood I’ve known I wanted to work in the medical field to give back.”

Dr. DeKam has joined the internal medicine team at Methodist Physicians Clinic. She loves the variety of conditions and patients she sees, but she especially enjoys helping patients with cardiovascular conditions, such as heart disease, hypertension and clotting disorders.

Along the way, she strives to forge relationships that are built on communication, compassion and education. When those elements come together, she said, her patients have the most success.

“It’s very rewarding to see patients participating in their own health care and making changes beyond me just prescribing medication,” Dr. DeKam said. “I want to make an impact on someone and help them enjoy their life more because they feel better about themselves and healthier with their bodies.”

And sometimes, she said, she’s just as impacted by a patient’s outcome.

“I once received flowers and a card from a patient who thanked me for saving his life and allowing him more time with his kids. That was a full-circle moment.”

When she’s not caring for patients, Dr. DeKam enjoys the simple things: baking, being outdoors, spending time with her family and exercising with her children.
