Internal medicine physician Shannon Boerner, MD, describes her job as cognitively demanding but emotionally fulfilling.

One moment she may be assessing a complicated medical situation; the next she could be chatting with a patient about their family or hobbies. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It means the world to me to know that people trust you in sometimes really difficult moments, sometimes really joyful moments and anything in between,” said Dr. Boerner, who has joined the internal medicine staff at Methodist Physicians Clinic. “You get to be a part of patients’ life experiences in a way that sometimes no other people do, and it’s really valuable to me to have that as my job.”

Dr. Boerner has special interests in women’s general and sexual health, offering a range of contraception care and feeling a strong connection to women experiencing menopause. She also has expertise caring for transgender and gender-expansive patients, as well as other members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“I strive to provide care that is nonjudgmental and ensures that all patients feel safe and comfortable – especially those who have struggled to feel like they’re heard, respected or welcomed into a practice,” she said. “They’re especially close to my heart.”

Outside of work, Dr. Boerner enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons. The diehard Husker fan also likes to travel, hike, camp and try new recipes.
