Methodist Physicians Clinic Welcomes Dr. Blake Volkmer to Family Medicine Team

Blake Volkmer, MD, views his relationship with each patient as a partnership. He wants them to buy in to the process of making health care decisions – and understand that he’ll “always have their back.”

“I don’t ever want to be in a relationship where I tell a patient what to do,” said Dr. Volkmer, a family medicine physician with Methodist Physicians Clinic. “When they come in to see me, we lock arms, explore their health together and make decisions that fit them best.”

Dr. Volkmer loves how family medicine lets him care for patients of all ages and help them through challenges that can arise in different stages of life.

“I don’t think there’s one specialty or position that gets that privilege or opportunity like family medicine does,” he said. “I get to see every facet of life. I get to be part of their health care and hear their story.”

He also has a passion for mental health and its place in a patient’s overall health.

“If there’s one message I want patients to take away, it’s that when they come to see me, it’s in my nature to explore every part of their life and health that they’re willing to share,” Dr. Volkmer said. “I want there to be no stone unturned, including their mental health – their mood, anxiety, depression, how they’re sleeping at night, stressors in their life. I want to explore those avenues with each of my patients and make sure that we’re addressing them so they’re living their best life.”

Dr. Volkmer describes himself as a “massive geek” outside of work. He loves all things “The Lord of the Rings,” hanging out in board game shops and playing Dungeons & Dragons. He also enjoys the outdoors, skiing, hiking, swimming, weight lifting and kettlebell training.
