Nebraska Methodist College students partner with Council Bluffs homeless shelter

A new partnership is fostering relationships with residents at a Council Bluffs homeless shelter and college students.

Nebraska Methodist College’s Master of Occupational Therapy program has a field-work component. This semester, students have been giving back on Thursdays at New Visions Homeless Services.

“The first part of becoming an OT is being able to meet people where they are,” Interim OT Program Director Jill Cuff said.

Cuff said the partnership was formed through the Jennie Edmundson Foundation’s Caring For Our Communities Program.

While the goal is to give people at the shelter opportunities for physical movement, they aren’t the only ones getting something positive out of the experience.

“Students benefit from learning how to step out of their typical space, environment and just engage with all members of our community,” Cuff said.
