NMC Hosting 5th Annual Minne Lusa Health Carnival April 18

700+ Children and Family Members Expected to Come Together
for Fun, Free Food, Better Health

Teddy bears are among those invited to attend the Fifth Annual Community Health Carnival for students and families in the Minne Lusa Elementary School neighborhood on Wednesday, April 18, 5 – 7 p.m., on the school grounds at 2728 Ida Street, Omaha.

The health carnival is organized and hosted by Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at Nebraska Methodist College (NMC).

A teddy bear checkup station, complete with stethoscope and heartbeat sounds, is just one of many activities available for kids and families. Numerous Omaha organizations have partnered with NMC to help to make the community health carnival a success, and, last year, more than 700 people attended the event.

This year, there will be a free hot meal, bounce house, music, games, bike raffle, health information booths, health screenings provided by NMC students and the opportunity to meet fire fighters, police officers and Midland College hockey players. There will also be free items for families to take home – including groceries, clothing and kids’ books.

“It’s a time for the community to come together,” said Amanda Harvey, one of the NMC nursing students and committee leaders involved in the event. “We want people to experience how much we care about one another, especially those in need.”

Minne Lusa Elementary has one of the highest free and reduced school lunch rates in the Omaha Public School System: 92.6% of the students qualify for assistance.

“Members of this community are in high need,” said Harvey, “and, as nursing students, we’re honored to be able to give them a hot meal and some resources for better health and nutrition. We want to keep kids and families healthy and out of the hospital.”
