WOWT: Methodist infectious disease physician weighs in as FDA approves at-home flu vaccine

Published: Sept. 30, 2025

Flu season is just around the corner, and Omaha families now have a new option: an at-home flu vaccine called FluMist.

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this year, the nasal spray is designed to make getting vaccinated easier, especially for busy parents and children.

Families can now be ordered FluMist online.

A healthcare professional reviews health information, and if approved, the vaccine is shipped to the home.

Some local doctors say the convenience could lead to higher vaccination rates.

“The hope is that this option translates into higher vaccination rates,” said Dr. Jessica Jones, infectious diseases specialist at Methodist Hospital. “If you have that ease of doing it at home, not having to make a special trip to the doctor’s office — especially with kids — we’re hoping this translates into higher vaccination rates.”
