How does the women’s health service line contribute to The Meaning of Care?

I feel like we are the very definition of The Meaning of Care because we get to advocate for our patients before they’re even born. Although the pregnant mother is the center of our care, we get to focus on the family as a unit and make sure their transition to home is as smooth as possible.

What’s something people may not know about women’s services at Methodist?

In some of the bigger hospitals, you either do labor and delivery, postpartum or NICU. On our unit, we get to do all three – which is something I love. I like the fact that you can take care of someone in labor and follow them through their postpartum period or take care of their baby in the NICU and follow them as they transition back to the floor. I think it allows us to really get to know our patients.

Tell us more about your role.

I’m one of the charge nurses on our floor. I provide direct patient care, do staffing, delegate tasks and handle any issues that happen throughout our shift. This also means that I’m involved in any emergencies on our floor and am a resource for our nurses if they have any questions or need help. Dr. Shawn Jones and I are the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) instructors for the hospital, as well, which I really enjoy. I’m passionate about education and I’m happy we were able to bring NRP to Jennie.

What do you enjoy most about your team?

The people I work with are my second family. There are weeks I see them more than my own family. And I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve formed while working here. Our team really is special. I know I can count on any of them for anything. We have great nurses who work extremely well together. I also feel very lucky that we have doctors and midwives who are so fun to work with.

Do you have any Methodist memories that stand out?

In 2015, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I will never forget how terrified I was, not only about the diagnosis but also about the fact that we had three very small children and the financial burden it was going to cause. The Jennie Edmundson Foundation reached out and helped us immensely – with our medical bills, gas cards, gift cards for groceries, etc. I was speechless, and as hard as it was to be on the other side of things as a patient, I knew that this was an organization that cares for its patients, and I wanted to be a part of that. I try to give back by being involved as much as I can with the Spirit of Courage every year, knowing firsthand how much the funds raised help families throughout their cancer diagnoses and treatment.

Why attracted you to Methodist?

When I was pregnant with my oldest, I was on a tour of the birthing center, and I will never forget how welcoming and kind everyone was. They really seemed to enjoy their jobs. When they found out I was a nurse and asked me if I would be interested in a position, I knew this was my chance to follow my passion. I was hired that same week!

What does The Meaning of Care mean to you?

It means I get the opportunity to make a difference to every person I encounter – whether that be a patient, a family member or someone I meet in the halls. We give the best care by always putting the patient first.

What’s the best thing about your role at Methodist?

One of the most rewarding things to me is taking care of patients that I have previously cared for. It’s fun to see them come back and watch their family grow. It’s such a good feeling when they’re excited to see that I’m still here, and we always pick back up where we left off.

What do you enjoy outside of your time at work?

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, watching my kids’ sports, traveling, and reading.
