Why Methodist?

Pectus excavatum, often called a sunken chest, is a condition in which the breastbone develops inward, creating a noticeable depression in the chest. While people are born with this condition, it may not become obvious until childhood, adolescence or even adulthood.

For some people, pectus excavatum is primarily a cosmetic concern. For others, it can cause physical symptoms that affect daily activities, exercise and overall well-being.

Methodist is proud to offer comprehensive pectus excavatum care for both adolescents and adults right here in Omaha. Led by HelenMari Merritt, DO, our team provides expert evaluation, treatment and ongoing support throughout every stage of care.

Our multidisciplinary team focuses on the complete patient experience, addressing both the physical effects of the condition and the emotional challenges that can come with it.

If you have been diagnosed with pectus excavatum or think you may have the condition, call (402) 354-0400 to schedule an appointment.

Symptoms

Symptoms of pectus excavatum can vary from person to person. Some individuals have few or no symptoms, while others experience challenges that become more noticeable over time.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath, especially during exercise or physical activity
  • Chest discomfort or pain
  • Fatigue or decreased endurance
  • Heart palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
  • Difficulty keeping up with physical activities

Beyond the physical symptoms, many people also struggle with self-consciousness, anxiety or concerns about body image related to the appearance of their chest.

Treatment

Advances in surgical care have made treatment for pectus excavatum more effective and less invasive than ever before.

One of the most common treatments is the Nuss procedure, a minimally invasive surgery that uses a curved support bar placed behind the breastbone to gradually reshape and elevate the chest wall. The bar typically remains in place for two to three years before being removed.

Support

Recovery from pectus excavatum treatment can be challenging, but Methodist is with you every step of the way. Our cardiothoracic surgery team will follow-up with you after surgery and throughout the healing process.

To help patients return to their daily activities as quickly and safely as possible, our physical therapy teams have developed rehabilitation plans specific for patients with pectus excavatum.

We also collaborate with the Methodist Community Counseling Program to provide patients and families support for the emotional and mental health challenges that can accompany a pectus excavatum diagnosis. Affordable services are easily accessible throughout the Omaha area.

From your first appointment through recovery, we're committed to providing compassionate, personalized care to help you heal, build confidence and return to the activities you enjoy.
