Dr. Barney Is Newest Member of Methodist Radiation Oncology Team

OMAHA — Fighting cancer is about much more than just treating the disease, Dr. Christian Barney says.

“When they come and see me, I'm all in,” said Dr. Barney, a radiation oncologist who has joined the Methodist cancer team. "I genuinely am interested not just in curing their cancer, but in them as a person, making them feel comfortable and making them as happy as possible.”

Dr. Barney has always had a passion for helping others. Before attending college, he moved to Brazil, learned Portuguese and volunteered to translate for a general surgery relief group. That experience sparked an interest in interacting with patients. He later volunteered at a cancer center while an undergraduate student at the University of Utah. His interest in cancer only grew from there.

Dr. Barney received his medical training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed an internal medicine internship at the University of Utah, and he was a radiation oncology resident at the Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital.

In his new role, he will provide care at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Cancer Center and West Dodge Medical Plaza.

Methodist’s investment in and commitment to cancer-fighting technology excites him as he begins to see patients.

“They've invested millions and millions of dollars into new radiation equipment at all their sites,” Dr. Barney said. “We have the top of the line, the best of the best machines that allow us to target a cancer most accurately while minimizing radiation dose to normal tissue.”

But that’s only part of the equation in caring for cancer patients.

“I want them to feel loved,” he said. “Care is love. I want them to feel like they come in and my staff, myself, whoever they interact with loves them and genuinely wants them to do well through their treatment and then thereafter.”
