Volunteer Opportunities and Benefits

When you become a member of Methodist VIP, you have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas suited to your preferences, availability and enjoyment. We look forward to your support in one or more of the following service areas.

Patient Services

Patient services volunteers are invaluable to patients in their rooms. They provide friendship and support to elder patients or those at end of life. They offer coffee, deliver flowers, help with mail and email, and provide assistance to our therapy dog program as well as radiology and cancer patients and staff.

Information and Hospitality

Volunteers who enjoy greeting people and providing information and guidance are needed to work at information desks, lobbies and the surgery waiting lounge, and also to guide visitors to their destinations.

Gift Shop

Whether selling candy and magazines or apparel and jewelry, our gift shop clerks provide an important retail service to patients, their families and to staff. In addition, gift shop buyers work closely with hospital staff to purchase merchandise. (All proceeds go toward the VIP annual funding designation.)

Support

Volunteers who provide operational support are vital to the day-to-day success of the hospital – whether they are putting together packets, collating brochures, delivering patient-related supplies, sewing projects for our patients or assisting in the hospital terrace garden.

Specialized Areas and Groups

Many volunteers offer their services for a specific cause or specialized area, such as Flamingos for Hope and Reach to Recovery volunteers (cancer survivors and caregivers who provide support and inspiration). Others serve on patient and family advisory councils and hospital committees.

Cuddlers

Adult volunteers with extensive service histories as members of the VIP program may be selected to receive additional specialized training to serve as Cuddlers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Women’s Hospital. The role of the Cuddler is to hold and comfort critically ill infants when parents and family members are not available to do so. **Due to a high volume of inquiries, outside applications for Cuddlers are not being accepted or considered at this time.

Volunteens

Our younger volunteers (ages 14-18) perform a variety of hospital support activities after school on weekdays. The Volunteen Program offers a wonderful opportunity for career exploration and for teens to develop leadership qualities and make new friends. If you know a teen who would be interested, print the application, complete and send to the volunteer office. Due to the large volume of Volunteen applications received, Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women's Hospital may have Volunteen waiting lists.

VIP Benefits

Member benefits include invitations to the Annual Meeting and Recognition Luncheon and other volunteer appreciation events; a complimentary meal from our cafeteria on your volunteer day; free flu shots for volunteers who offer on-site service; and a 10% discount in the gift shop.
