Why Methodist?
At Methodist, we know that early detection is key to survival. Our team of experts performs more than 2,000 low-dose CT scans annually and has identified dozens of early-stage lung cancers. Our designated lung cancer screening coordinator and nurse navigators ensure a comfortable, personalized experience while shining a light on a number of resources – including Methodist’s Smoking Cessation Program – to give patients the best chance at successful outcomes. With notable designations from the American College of Radiology and the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, patients can rest assured that they’re getting the best care possible close to home. Methodist Health System was the first in the region to offer lung screenings in 2001.
Studies have shown that detecting lung cancer in its earliest stages through screenings has dramatically improved survival rates. You are eligible for lung cancer screening if you meet all the following criteria:
- Are 50-80 years old
- Are asymptomatic (have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer)
- Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years
- Have a 20 pack-year smoking history (one pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 10 years, etc.)
- Receive a written order for a low-dose CT scan from your provider
If you have a history of smoking, talk to your primary care provider about whether you should consider a low-dose CT scan. Your provider will discuss your options, the risks and recommendations.
State-of-the-Art Care
Patients with suspicious lung masses may be candidates for biopsies using the Ion by Intuitive robot-assisted system. Methodist was first in the region with this cutting-edge technology, which allows providers to perform biopsies of smaller and harder-to-reach nodules – catching cancer sooner while offering patients a less invasive experience.
