Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Every pregnancy is special, but some pregnancies require even more advanced care. When your pregnancy is complex, your obstetrical care provider may recommend consultation with one of our board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists.

Why Methodist?

The Methodist Women’s Hospital Perinatal Center is home to the largest group of board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists in the Midwest. Our perinatologists are fellows of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), and are board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine through the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Working to Keep Moms with Complex Pregnancies in Their Communities

Our goal is to enable women to remain in their home communities and continue obstetric care with their own providers whenever possible. Through our expanding use of physician outreach and telehealth, we minimize patient travel and can serve you where you are. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists work closely with referring physicians and community hospitals around the Midwest to help families enjoy a pregnancy and birth experience that is as healthy as possible.

Conditions Needing Perinatal Care

Many preexisting or developing medical conditions can impact your pregnancy and require consultation with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, including:

  • An abnormal finding on a sonogram
  • Advanced maternal age (35 years or older)
  • Multiple gestation
  • Positive maternal genetic screen
  • Patient or family history of genetic and/or chromosomal disorders
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Previous pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia

  • Cervical insufficiency
  • Preterm labor
  • Exposure to medications, radiation, alcohol or drugs
  • Infectious disease in pregnancy
