What a Breast Lift (With or Without Augmentation) Entails
A breast lift – or mastopexy – is the surgical elevation of the breasts that raises and reshapes the breast by removing or tightening extra skin and repositions the nipples/areolas.
Someone women opt to combine a breast lift with augmentation, which includes the implantation of saline or silicone gel devices – or the transfer of fat from one part of the body to the breast area – following the breast lift. This two-part procedure can be done together or separately depending on your individual goals and concerns.
At Methodist, your breast lift with or without augmentation begins with a thorough and detailed consultation with one of our experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeons in a private, comfortable environment. Your consult will cover a variety of topics, including:
- Your individual goals and options
- The surgical process
- Recovery
- Surgical risks
- Cost and maintenance
Ideal candidates for a breast lift include those who are:
- At or near their ideal weight, or planning to maintain their current weight
- In good overall physical and mental health
- Nonsmokers
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding, and not planning to have more children
- Not undergoing cancer treatment
- Over the age of 18 (unless otherwise medically necessary)
Patients who are 35 and older, or patients who have a significant family history of breast cancer, should consider having a baseline mammogram before undergoing a breast lift. For those considering a breast lift with augmentation, keep in mind that the lifespan of implants can vary depending on a patient’s lifestyle and daily habits. Although some results may last a lifetime, most patients should expect a second surgery for implant revision or replacement at some point in their life – generally around the 10-year mark.
