What a Tummy Tuck Entails
A tummy tuck or – or abdominoplasty – is the surgical removal of extra skin from the midsection, sometimes referred to as a “pooch.” There are several variations of a tummy tuck that begin with one or multiple incisions and sometimes liposuction, belly button repositioning or muscle tightening – the suturing of abdomen muscles that have separated due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations.
Methodist offers the following tummy tucks:
- Mini – This more modest approach addresses loose skin and fat below the belly button with a shorter, horizontal incision just above the pubic area.
- Full – Also known as a total abdominoplasty, a full tummy tuck requires a horizontal (hip to hip) incision to remove extra skin and fat above and below the belly button before tightening the abdominal muscles, using liposuction and/or repositioning the belly button.
- Fleur de Lis – This procedure involves vertical and horizontal incisions for more extensive skin and fat removal for a more narrowed, contoured waistline.
- Extended – Key features of an extended tummy tuck are a larger, horizontal incision – often going past both hips – to address extra fat from the abdomen, flanks (sometimes referred to as “love handles”), hips and/or lower back. Muscle tightening, liposuction and belly button repositioning are usually also incorporated for a more toned, natural appearance.
At Methodist, your tummy tuck begins with a thorough and detailed consultation with one of our experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeons in a private, comfortable environment. Your consult will cover a variety of topics, including:
- Your individual goals and options
- The surgical process
- Recovery
- Surgical risks
- Cost and maintenance
Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck include those who are:
- At their ideal body weight
- In good overall physical and mental health
- Nonsmokers
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding and done having children
- Not undergoing cancer treatment
- Over the age of 18 (unless otherwise medically necessary)
Tummy tucks can be combined with other cosmetic procedures and are often part of the Mommy Makeover, which typically addresses the breasts and belly. Patients are encouraged to wait at least a year after pregnancy before pursuing a tummy tuck.
What a Tummy Tuck Can Do
- Improve self-esteem
- Eliminate excess skin and fat from the midsection
- Improve tone and definition of the midsection, especially following pregnancy or weight loss.
A tummy tuck is a body contouring – not a weight loss – procedure. Patients may be encouraged to lose additional weight before undergoing the procedure to help avoid complications and ensure proper healing. Your surgeon will help you determine what type of tummy tuck best suits your individual goals.
